2020 Awards programme: record number of applications received

We welcomed applications to our 2020 Awards programme from January to the end of April and in a few weeks we will announce up to £100,000 in individual Awards. These will range from £100 to £2,000 and go to young musicians from across the UK demonstrating exceptional musical potential in their chosen genre as well as financial need.

Demand for the programme has grown by 40% since 2015. This year we received a record 390 eligible applications, a jump of 50 from 2019. Requests for support have included paying for music tuition and buying instruments, purchasing recording equipment and software and helping with travel t  music activities.

It has been brilliant to be able to take up all the lessons I have been offered thanks to my Award from AYM. I would not have progressed as I have without it. It has meant I have been able to perform with the youth and adult bands as well as solo performances.

Alexander (11), bagpipes, a 2019 Award winner.

The applications – which include an audition video or example of creative work (such as a track or composition) – are currently being reviewed by our independent adjudication panel comprising a diverse range of expertise from across music education and the music industry.

AYM will contact all applicants towards the end of June and into early July with the outcome of their application. If you have a question about your 2020 Awards application in the meantime, please contact Hannah and Angharad on 0300 302 0023, or [email protected].

I feel really proud to be an AYM award winner. I have my certificate up at home and I’m extremely proud of it because it’s recognition of all my hard work and efforts towards becoming the best musician I can be. The Award means I have access to things I wouldn’t otherwise be able to do and I feel really lucky to be part of AYM.

Kimi (13), drums, a 2019 Award winner

We are busy planning an exciting year of opportunities for our 2020 cohort, including online and in-person activities. This includes our annual Awards Day, planned for spring 2021, when we hope it will be safe to bring our young musicians together for an exciting day of music making with some of the top musicians in the industry. Take a look our 2018 Awards Day video below for a taster.

I absolutely loved the Awards Day. It was a fabulous day from start to finish. I was in the group that made up a piece of music and it was fantastic to hear our finished piece. It made me very proud to be an Award winner and listen to all the pieces that were played by all the groups on the day”
