Young Sounds UK announces Prelude, helping young classical musicians take their next steps into Conservatoire
Today Young Sounds UK, with support from Purposeful Ventures, announce Prelude, a new mentoring and financial support project. Prelude will help musicians on Young Sounds UK’s Thrive programme through the preparation, application and audition process to Music Conservatoire. This tailored support will ensure their journey to further education is enhanced, informed, and fulfilling. Prelude will:
- Provide direct funding to young people to cover the practical and immediate costs related to auditioning for multiple conservatoires
- Provide mentoring support and opportunities directly related to the conservatoire application and auditioning process
- Explore and evidence the potential impact of an intervention which directly addresses the practical needs of young people from lower-income families.
Background
Young musicians should be able to progress their interests and potential in classical music as far as they would like, including into higher education and a career. But for many young people from lower socioeconomic backgrounds this can be harder to achieve.
Thrive young musicians demonstrate extraordinary musical potential but can lack the confidence to tackle challenges or have belief in their own ability. This is heightened by external barriers such as financial circumstances and a lack of information.
There are multiple costs associated with applying to music college/conservatoire: these include consultation lessons, extensive travel to different institutions, accommodation, accompanists and rehearsals. Application and audition fees alone can cost up to £150.
Applying to a Music Conservatoire can also be a lengthy process involving research into courses, understanding the application process, seeking consultation lessons with potential teachers, attending Open Days and eventually the all-important audition day.
The sector, aware of these challenges, continues to widen participation programmes and increase its offers of support. However additional resource is still needed and Prelude is intended to complement recent developments and expand on the support available.
How this will help
Young Sounds UK supports musicians from low-income families: in 2025 average household income was £19,069. The biggest barrier many of these young people face is a financial one: developing musical potential is extremely expensive. Since 1998 Young Sounds have supported more than 7,500 young people aged 7-18 who would otherwise find their musical costs prohibitive.
Participants selected from the Thrive programme to participate in Prelude will access practical, logistical, and financial support to navigate the auditions process for conservatoires. This support includes:
- Mentoring from Industry professionals
- Mentoring and in-person support from Thrive Alumni attending conservatoires.
- Mock auditions with professional musicians
- Rehearsal time with a professional accompanist
- Practice tips and audition advice sessions
- Presentation and interview technique workshops
- Funding to cover all application and audition fees, consultation lessons, travel and accommodation, for the young musicians and their parents/carers, if needed.
On the impact of Prelude, Thrive Programme Director Jessica Burroughs said:

For some, financial, practical, or personal barriers makes studying at a conservatoire appear beyond their reach. Through Prelude, young musicians can make informed decisions about the conservatoires that are right for them and be secure in the knowledge that Prelude’s financial support reduces barriers at this critical stage in their musical journey.”

Purposeful Ventures is supporting Young Sounds UK to design and deliver this programme. Prelude sits within their Music & Arts portfolio, which aims to help more children and young people to explore the arts and advance their creative interests, including into a career.
