“I started playing instruments later than other young musicians”.
Fifteen year old Zahabia always loved music but financial constraints meant she didn’t start learning an instrument until she was 12 years old. She now plays guitar, dilruba and saxophone!
“Zahabia is an exceptional talent with a natural musical ability. She has the drive to make music her profession” says her guitar teacher, Tim.
Zahabia’s Mum, Kauser, heard about Awards for Young Musicians through South Asian Arts and applied straight away for an Award to support Zahabia’s progression.
“The support I now receive means I’m progressing quickly and I can play in orchestras and bands” says Zahabia. Zahabia enjoys experimenting with fusing the different genres she loves including South Asian classical music, pop and folk music. She’s currently learning her favourite Bollywood songs on her saxophone. When not making music, Zahabia is a Youth Service Ambassador, supporting her home city Bradford in their bid to become the City of Culture in 2025. She also has great ambitions to break down barriers.
“As a Muslim girl of Pakistani background music can still be taboo and I want to change that. Next year I’m going to start busking to break stereotypes. My biggest dream is to be the first female Muslim singer and musician to have a UK number 1 single.”
At whatever stage a young person starts their musical journey and discovers their talent, we’re here to ensure that they can reach their potential. We can only support musicians like Zahabia with help from generous individuals.
