This week, as part of our Champions for Children appeal, we’re introducing you to seven young musicians who are all on our Furthering Talent programme in Lewisham.
Today we’d like you to meet 12 year old Mia.
Mia had been learning the viola but when lockdown hit she had to stop her lessons. When she joined Furthering Talent in September last year, she began electric guitar lessons. Music and singing make up a big part of Mia’s life. As well as playing instruments, she’s also a member of the Blackheath Halls Choir and the Youth Opera Company.
Mia says
“I like music because I think it’s very inspirational and educational. It allows you to express yourself in ways that other things can’t. I also think it gives you a lot of chances and it can match whatever mood you’re feeling.”
You can help young musicians like Mia by supporting AYM and Lewisham Music in our Champions for Children appeal.

This week we’re raising £24,150 to support our Furthering Talent programme. Through this, 30 children in Lewisham, like Mia, will receive tailored musical support including free weekly instrumental lessons.
The Childhood Trust have generously backed our project, along with many of our kind supporters. This means that any donations, up to a total of £12,075, made between now and midday on Tuesday 28 June will be doubled!
We’ve already raised £20,590 and just have another £3,560 to go!
Please donate today so that many more young people like Mia can reach their musical potential. Thank you!
