AYM Patron Alpesh Chauhan OBE

AYM Patron recognised in Queen’s New Year Honours

We are delighted to hear that British conductor and AYM Patron Alpesh Chauhan has been awarded an OBE in Her Majesty The Queen’s New Year’s Honours list for 2022.

The Music Director of Birmingham Opera Company was delighted to accept the award:

‘It is a very happy surprise to find out that I am awarded an OBE in the 2022 Queen’s New Year Honours list for Services to the Arts – while totally unexpected, I hugely appreciate the recognition and the prestige of the award.’

In a Facebook post he thanked family, friends and teachers while also reflecting on his heritage and the obstacles faced:

‘As the son of immigrant parents from East Africa (of Indian origins), I would like to dedicate this to them. My parents were born into relative poverty but worked extremely hard as British Citizens to make sure their three kids were given every opportunity to succeed and thrive – always pushing us to achieve our dreams.

I know that many people of my ethnic background are stopped from entering the world of the Arts before they are even exposed to their wonders, and I feel very lucky to have had parents who were so open and supportive, giving me the opportunity to fulfil my passion.

If anything, I hope that this can show others from my background that following their passions is ‘allowed’ and with drive and perseverance you can achieve – and I also hope it may give parents from my background the confidence to permit their children to explore their interests – even if they don’t understand at first. Every hobby can become your life and your life’s work and goal – or even just remain a cherished pastime.’

We’re very proud to have Alpesh as a Patron and hope this Award is an inspiration to all young musicians. Congratulations Alpesh and a very happy new year to all of our supporters who continue to give talent a chance!
