“For me, music is life. When I’m ill or sad, music cheers me up and inspires me to keep going.”

This week (Tuesday 30 November – Tuesday 7 December) AYM are taking part in the Big Give Christmas Challenge. We’re sharing seven stories of what music means to seven young musicians we’ve supported. By the end of the week the theme of these stories will have spelled BIG GIVE. Today is day five, our theme is the letter “I” and we’d like to introduce you to 12 year old cellist, composer and pianist Avram who writes about what inspires him.

“Creative composers, dedicated musicians, nature, science, art, humour, and human kindness, all inspire me to try to find a positive even when life is hard. For my part I want to spread friendliness, music, and mints (I like to give mints!).

“Working towards my dream, I really appreciate getting help to pay for music lessons and essential equipment. That generosity inspires me to work hard, and to want to do something for others.”

“Recently I started exploring my Jewish musical roots, and now I’m preparing a programme of many kinds of Jewish music to take to retirement homes and elsewhere in the community. I hope it inspires memories and curiosity, and that it brings people together.”

Avram is also participating in our Attune chamber music project funded by the Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation and run in partnership with the City of London Sinfonia and the Royal Academy of Music.

“I’m hugely grateful to AYM for giving me the opportunity to take part in chamber music sessions. Playing Schubert’s great String Quintet (one of my favourite pieces) has been the inspiring highlight of my year!”

If you would like to support more young musicians like Avram on their own inspirational musical journeys, please donate this week during the Big Give Christmas Challenge. We’re raising £70,000 to support talented young musicians through our Awards programme. Donations made during the Big Give Christmas Challenge can be doubled, meaning your donation will have twice its impact!
