We’re searching for 5 new Music Education Hub partners to join the next phase of our Furthering Talent programme in 2020.
Furthering Talent’s main funding comes from Youth Music as part of the Alliance for Musically Inclusive England. The programme’s mission is to sustain a musical life for young people from low income families who would not be able to make the most of their potential without personalised support for their progression.
Furthering Talent already helps nearly 300 talented young people in 10 Hubs: Bradford, Brighton, Greater Manchester, Hull, Leicestershire, Manchester City, The Music Partnership (North-West Midlands), Nottinghamshire, Sheffield and Wiltshire.
Funding is in place for 5 more Hub partners to join in 2020 and AYM is specifically looking for new Hubs who can help make the programme as musically diverse as possible.
Firstly, and vitally, Furthering Talent funds individual weekly instrumental tuition for participants, with each child having their own personalised Individual Learning Plan: musical goals are agreed between the young person and the music leader working with them and these goals are then funded with a personal bursary. This Individual Learning Plan places the student at the heart of their learning, giving them ownership of their musical journey.
A range of other support is offered too: for young people and their families AYM organises termly Get Togethers, where children and their parents/carers can discover new musical experiences, genres or styles – from a beatboxing workshop to a visit to the opera or a folk taster session. By inviting families along, AYM encourages engagement with each child’s music making and creates a real sense of community around the programme. Equally essential is supporting the local community of music leaders: those teaching on the programme are paid to attend termly Teachers’ Forums where they discuss students’ progress, share good practice and welcome external speakers and practitioners. These forums provide valuable time for reflection and inspiration in teachers’ busy schedules. A Local Coordinator also manages programme delivery locally, maximising the resources and opportunities of each Hub’s partnerships.
