15 year old Jahzara joined our Thrive programme in 2023. She shares how her love of music started:
“In November 2020, I was given an amazing opportunity. I was able to take lessons of an instrument of my choice. I was excited to start these lessons and waited just over 6 months for them to begin.
“I started my piano lessons in June 2021 and instantly I could see the change in my wellbeing and confidence. Over time, I learned how to express myself through the music I was learning and how to channel my emotions into something creative. It allowed me to become a better person and to show my feelings in a productive and harmless manner. It also gave me great opportunities in and out of school that I would never have if it weren’t for my musical knowledge. I was able to perform at my school concert, run a club at a local primary school helping students with piano, and even join our school band. Learning the piano has allowed me to become a much better version of myself and has significantly improved my mental health and has even had a positive effect on my social interactions and confidence.”

However, due to the cost of living crisis, Jahzara’s family couldn’t continue to afford to pay for lessons and unfortunately, her school wasn’t able to provide musical support, as she explains: “I was unable to carry on with music at GCSE due to a lack of applicants and clashes in the timetable. It’s also been difficult to find a place that will allow me to take music as a private candidate.”
Jahzara applied to Thrive, and used her Award to help pay for piano lessons and exam fees so she could continue her music education. She says:
“I’m greatly thankful for the support I have received from Young Sounds. It’s allowed me to achieve my goal moving on to my grade 6 piano and continue developing as a musician, which has been so important and needed during a financially difficult time for my family.
“I’m really passionate about music – it has a positive impact on my wellbeing. It’s helped me build confidence and have a creative outlet to express myself. I’m happy and grateful that I can continue lessons in an area where opportunities to play instruments are limited.”
We can’t support talented young people like Jahzara without your help. Please donate to our Big Give Christmas Challenge to help us reach more young musicians like her, and give them a musical future. Thank you!
