Since joining Liverpool’s Connect programme in September 2025, young musician Lexi is learning to spread her wings with songwriting!
Once Lexi began piano lessons with Connect teacher David Kelly, she developed her passion for making music and began working on her own original song called ‘A Chance to Fly’. The song was inspired by the negative experience of a Disabled friend when trying to board an aeroplane. Lexi herself has a visual impairment, cerebral palsy which affects the right side of her body, and a small pituitary gland. She knows first-hand how difficult and expensive it can be for Disabled people to access the things that they want to do.
“Writing this song has definitely helped me to express some of those feelings. We all need a change in accessibility for everyone.”
Lexi first came up with a chorus, then worked with David to add chords and a drum track. This has now developed into a full song, and Lexi is hoping to include some soundbites of interviews that she will be doing with other pupils at the school about what accessibility means to them. There are also plans to add a choir part and for the whole piece to come together in a performance in a school assembly and at the school’s annual celebration.

Since joining the Connect programme, Lexi has now also joined the Young DaDa ensemble (a local ensemble for young Deaf and Disabled musicians) where she is putting her newfound songwriting skills to further use! Lexi says:
“Music, to me, is self-expression. It is a voice for people who either do not have a voice or do not know how to say it without that outlet.”
With your support, we can help more young musicians like Lexi realise their musical potential. Find out how you can help us give musical talent a chance.
