The Monica & Quintin Des Clayes Awards

The Monica and Quintin Des Clayes Awards are endowed annually for 25 promising young musicians in the UK. They have been given by their three sons and daughter, in memory of their parents.

Quintin (1926-2018) was a Royal Naval instructor officer specialising in mathematics. However, as a very keen flautist, much of his time was spent making music – chamber music, orchestral music, singing in choirs and conducting. After leaving the Navy as a Commander with an OBE in his 50s, he devoted as much time as possible to teaching music and organising concerts for his students, continuing until he was in his 90s. He loved this work, charging minimal fees, believing passionately that music should be available to all, regardless of wealth. He would be delighted to know that many students will benefit in this way from this legacy. Monica (1927-2016) supported him and his musical activities throughout their 65 years of married life together, and home-tutored young people ‘challenged by school life.’

Applications for this Award should be made via the normal application procedure.
