Leicester born drummer Jake Freeman and his band Nobody’s Secret have been nominated for Best Original Track at the Youth Music Awards, a milestone Jake credits to the support he first received through Young Sounds UK (then known as Awards for Young Musicians).
“The only reason I’m here now is because of that support. Without it, I wouldn’t have got drum lessons, and I wouldn’t have gone to the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts (LIPA).”

Jake joined our Connect programme as a teenager after his teacher spotted his gift for rhythm, but with lessons proving difficult to afford, he relied on YouTube tutorials and staying behind at school. That changed when Young Sounds stepped in to fund his drum tuition and open new opportunities, from orchestras to ensemble playing.
“Playing in an ensemble made me realise what it feels like to be part of something bigger. It opened new doors and ways of thinking that shaped me as a musician.”
Through a bursary, Young Sounds contributed to his ABRSM Theory exam entry fee. He would go on to graduate from LIPA with first-class honours in 2024.
“In Leicester the only live music I had ever seen was live music I played! I’d never been to a gig before. In Liverpool there were performances left, right and centre.”
Inspired, Jake co-founded Nobody’s Secret, a band blending dark pop, metal and gothic rock. Alongside Jake on drums, the band features Jadzia “Jazz” Rock (vocals), Kyle Hill (guitar), and Johnathan Martin (bass). Since forming in 2023, they’ve built a reputation for intense live shows and DIY releases, including two singles and an EP.
The group’s songwriting process is as modern as their sound:
“We actually write through Discord. It’s usually for gaming, but for us it’s just natural. You can jump in and out, no scheduling. It keeps things fluid.”
Jake hasn’t forgotten the support that helped him get started. He recently joined our Artistry and Industry Day in Nottingham, working with young people exploring their own creative paths. He was also reunited with his drum teacher Lee Allatson.
“Because of what Young Sounds did for me, I’ve always wanted to give back. It’s a passion of mine to help others find their way in music.”

He’s equally keen to encourage families to nurture young musicians:
“Even if it’s just a first gig in a small venue, show up and support them. To you it might look small, but to them it means everything. Those early moments are what push you forward.”
From practising along to YouTube videos to standing on stage with his bandmates, Jake’s story shows how the right support, encouragement, and a lot of determination can transform a musical journey.
If you know a young person with buckets of musical potential who could benefit from lessons, financial support and musical opportunities, find out what we can offer through our Connect programme.
