We’re delighted to introduce our sixth Alumni Trustee! Sehyogue Aulakh joins fellow Alumnus Morro Barry on the board and follows in the footsteps of previous Alumni Trustees Caius Lee, Mahaliah Edwards, Ella McCoshan and Max Brown.
Since 2019, we’ve welcomed applications from Alumni to join our Board of Trustees. Young people are at the heart of Young Sounds UK and our Alumni Trustees ensure that young people are directly involved in decision making whilst giving them the knowledge, understanding and experience of how a charity is governed.
Sehyogue Aulakh is a British/Indian percussionist based in Birmingham, UK. Her work has brought her all over the UK, playing with chamber ensembles, orchestras, collaborative interdisciplinary arts projects, solo work and as a music educator.
With a broad range of disciplines across percussion, Sehyogue studied classical/orchestral percussion at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire after growing up immersed in a range of musical styles. She has played with award-winning ensemble, Engines Orchestra, which has received praise from The Guardian, BBC Radio 3, Jazzwise and won a Parliamentary Jazz Award.

Sehyogue is currently a Glyndebourne, Jerwood Pit Perfect Scholar and has also played for sessions on BBC Radio 3 and BBC Radio 6 Music. She has developed a range of education work as a private teacher as well as workshop leader/music facilitator, most recently working with National Orchestra for All.
Young Sounds supported Sehyogue in 2018 with financial help and musical opportunities through our Thrive programme. On this new role, Sehyogue says:
“Young Sounds were pivotal to my development as a young musician and their support opened up access to musical opportunities that were hugely influential and inspiring throughout my learning enabling me to begin to pursue a musical career. It’s such a privilege to continue to be part of the Young Sounds community and involved as a trustee.”
As part of this role, Sehyogue’s responsibilities will include supporting the inspiring work of our Thrive programme through its dedicated steering group, and contributing to the important conversations and positive action within our EDI committee.
If you’re part of our unique community of Alumni, we’d love to find ways to continue to involve you with our programmes!
This will include paid and voluntary opportunities, such as taking part in webinars for our young people, and professional development opportunities to expand your skills and musical experiences.
Whether you were supported by Young Sounds (formerly Awards for Young Musicians) two years ago or two decades ago, we’d love to hear from you. Please use this short form to opt in. You can also tell us more about what you’re up to now in your studies or career.
